How It Works...

Stereoscopic displays/images/videos are the traditional 3D displays that require users to wear special 3D glasses. These displays have been around for ever and are what most people think of when thinking of 3D. There are four different types of stereoscopic displays: frame sequential, side-by-side, top-bottom and interlaced.

Autostereoscopic displays do not require any glasses at all! They work by diverting each column of pixels to an individual eye, thus providing a unique image to each eye. When a unique picture is sent to each individual eye, your brain compares the different views, from right and left eyes, proceses the data, and creates what we see as a single 3D image.

There are two ways of directing the light to each eye in autostereoscopic displays, either by using a parallax barrier or a lenticular lens. The diagram below illustrates how the light from left and right pixel columns reaches the eye:

Multi-View Lenticular Overlay:

In the lenticular lens, an array of cylindrical lenses directs light from alternate pixel columns to a defined viewing zone, allowing each eye to receive a different image at an optimum distance.
